It is thought that the well-known German writers from the Old High German period on were the driving force behind the standardization process of the written German language. This was because the old German writers had to work hard to write their books in a language that would be understood by the major German speaking populations. This process effectively led to the standardization of the German language. The literature of old writers like Goethe, Schiller, Heine and Mann can be found even today in German libraries. Literature in Germany includes subjects like cosmopolitan culture, metaphysics, pop culture, religion, everyday life stories, etc. Famous German authors in recent period include Schulze, Judith Herrmann, Thomas Brussig, Feridun Zaimoglu, Elke Naters, Christian Kracht and Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre.
